When Flanders Electric, a national motor repair company, began their pursuit to become ISO registered, they knew they needed some help. Headquartered in Evansville with locations across the country, Flanders knew the process to become registered would not be easy - or quick. Every aspect of their business would have to be analyzed and proven to be in line with the demanding ISO quality standards. So Flanders turned to Harding, Shymanski & Company, P.S.C. for help.
"The registration process is complex," says Flanders Electric Co-owner Jim Havens. "We knew we needed help from someone with extensive knowledge and experience handling this sort of thing. And it had to be someone we could trust."
Because of their decades of service from Harding, Shymanski & Company, P.S.C., Flanders turned to the CPA firm's Manufacturing Consultant Floyd McKeag for the help they were looking for. As an experienced consultant, McKeag had been involved with quality assurance before and knew what it would take to get Flanders recommended for ISO registration.
"It's an involved process that requires a lot of legwork," says McKeag. "Flanders had an aggressive timeline that we knew would be tough to meet. But we stuck with it and kept on track through it all."
The result? Flanders Electric Company received their ISO 9001:2000 registration in just nine months and are now able to serve their customers better than ever before.
"We knew this process would help us improve, but we didn't realize how much," says Havens. "We now have a much more detailed knowledge of our business and more control on how things are done. Communication within our organization is vastly superior."
Co-owner David Patterson agrees. "I can see a lot better efficiency in tracking parts, tracking jobs, workflow, storage of parts, availability of equipment and tools," he says. "Although we were efficient before ISO, this enabled us to improve even more - and also expand our customer base."
No one has a closer view of that improvement than Flanders Electric's Quality Assurance Coordinator, Dee Matthews. Matthews worked at length with McKeag to make sure their processes and systems were in order for ISO registration.
"I can already see an improvement," says Matthews. "We're producing a better quality product, things are running more smoothly and it's made a lot of our jobs a whole lot easier. Floyd really helped us get to this point and meet our goal. We couldn't be happier."
